Extension Castle Museum Linz
bfa - Büro Für Architektur BDA
The objective of the competition was the design of the extension of the Castle Museum in Linz in the area of the former southern wing which was destroyed by a fire in 1800 and not rebuilt. The new extension will house the museum of nature and technology history.
The volume of the new museum consists of the crystal shaped exhibition which is distributed over three floors and a box which is inserted into the irregular shape and houses restaurant and event spaces. It opens towards and interacts with the city over a generous curtain wall façade which offers a stunning view over Linz. The new connection between the existing middle wing and the extension creates two new spacious yards with different functions such as open-air café and museum gardens. Both the new extension and the historic castle will be accessed from the new foyer which is connected to one of the courtyards.
