Theatre Workshop
The 'National Academy of Rotenfels Castle' decided to add a theatre and exhibition workshop to the existing historical ensemble of buildings which is located in a park-like area at the edge of the forest.
By Creating a new plaza between the existing and the new structure both buildings will be linked strongly. The visible part of the new building is minimized by locating most of the functions underground. It has a rather restrained form as well and therefore it will not compete with the actual focus of the ensemble, the castle. The event room is naturally exposed by five northlight roof spaces which give the building the characteristic appearance of a workshop. The building is divided into three clearly separated spaces: the entrance foyer, the multifunctional event room and the backstage area. The sunken yard is directly connected to the event space and can be used for open-air performances in summer time.
The facade is covered with untreated horizontal boards of lark wood which will become naturally grey after some time.
